The Issue

The Eagle Creek Reservoir in Indianapolis is a central water source not only for our immediate community but for the entire city. This reservoir supplies drinking water to thousands of residents in Indianapolis. It's more than just a scenic landscape; it's a vital component of healthy living for families like mine.

Recently, we've been alarmed by the potential ramifications of the LEAP project, which seeks to extract water from Eagle Creek reservoir and discharge wastewater back into the Eagle Creek watershed.

Allowing the LEAP project to exploit the Eagle Creek Reservoir poses significant risks to our community’s vitality and well-being. Any disruption to this precious water source could jeopardize our health and that of future generations. Our reservoir's water should remain clean and unpolluted to ensure a sustainable future where we can continue to count on safe drinking water and a healthy environment.

Statistics show that the Eagle Creek Reservoir is a cornerstone water supply for the estimated 876,000 residents of Indianapolis (source: City of Indianapolis, Department of Public Works). The proposed extraction for the LEAP project could reduce the reservoir’s water levels, impacting not only drinking water availability but also diminishing recreational opportunities that numerous families enjoy.

Moreover, the introduction of wastewater back into the watershed is concerning. Such actions increase the risk of contaminating the reservoir with pollutants that could harm both the ecosystem and human health. Pollution of any kind endangers wildlife, aquatic life, compromises water quality, and inevitably poses health risks to consumers using this water source. Once polluted, the cleanup of waterways can be extraordinarily expensive and time-consuming, with some communities taking decades to restore a healthy state.

We urge local authorities, environmental agencies, and the developers of the LEAP project to reconsider their plans regarding the Eagle Creek Reservoir. Alternatives must be explored that do not place our precious water supply and ecology at risk. Innovations in sustainable water management should be pursued that align with both developmental goals and ecological preservation.
